OEM and ODM: what can actually be customised on a portable AC

Colour, branding and cartons are routine changes. New housing moulds and control logic are programme-level projects. Here is where the line sits.

OEM and ODM: what can actually be customised on a portable AC article cover

Changes that travel with the sample order

Cosmetic and market-fit changes are the practical starting point for a private label programme, because they can be agreed from a sample and validated before mass production.

  • Housing colour and finish, including moulded-in colour combinations
  • Logo printing and badge on the front panel and on the remote control
  • Carton artwork, item codes and shipping marks
  • Plug type, voltage and frequency for the destination grid
  • Manual language, nameplate data and accessory pack contents

Changes that need a project plan

A different housing shape, a redesigned control panel or new electronics mean tooling, safety re-evaluation and a new test cycle. These are legitimate programmes, but they run on a different clock from a colour change and should be planned a season ahead.

Changing the refrigerant or the compressor is the most consequential change of all, because it touches efficiency figures, safety documentation and, in most markets, the certification file.

What a good OEM brief contains

The brief that moves fastest states the volume band, the target price position and the market, then lists the changes the buyer wants. That combination lets the factory separate what can be adjusted on an existing platform from what needs tooling.

  • Destination market and required certification scheme
  • Capacity ladder required across the range
  • Customisation list, marked as cosmetic or structural
  • Planned annual volume and first order quantity
  • Target launch window so tooling and testing can be scheduled
