How to size a portable air conditioner for your market

Floor area alone will not tell you which capacity to buy. Here is how importers estimate cooling load, read the model ladder and avoid returns caused by undersized units.

How to size a portable air conditioner for your market article cover

Start with cooling load, not floor area

Portable air conditioners are quoted in BTU/h, and the figure a room actually needs depends on more than its floor area. Volume, insulation, glazing, occupancy, appliance heat and the local summer design temperature all shift the number, which is why two rooms of the same size can sit a full size class apart.

A practical starting point for a residential room is to take the room volume, apply a load factor that reflects insulation quality and sun exposure, then add a margin for occupancy and kitchen or equipment heat.

  • Measure volume, not just floor area, because ceiling height varies between markets
  • Increase the estimate for south and west facing glazing without shading
  • Add capacity for rooms that combine living and cooking functions
  • Check the local summer design temperature before choosing the smallest option

Read the capacity ladder in the range

A portable range is normally built as a ladder of nominal capacities. Compact units around 3,000 BTU/h are aimed at tents, personal spaces and where power draw matters more than cooling reach. The 7,000 to 12,000 BTU/h band covers bedrooms, studies and single offices, while 16,000 BTU/h and above is used for open areas, shops and light commercial spaces.

Model numbers often encode the nominal capacity, so 20 points to 7,000 BTU/h, 26 to 9,000 BTU/h, 29 to 10,000 BTU/h and 35 to 12,000 BTU/h. Confirming that convention with the factory saves a round of questions when you compare quotes.

Check the ambient operating window

Portable units are rated for a defined indoor ambient range, commonly around 17 to 35 °C. Above the upper limit, delivered capacity falls and the compressor may cycle more often, so markets with very hot summers are better served by a size above the basic estimate rather than a unit run at its limit.

Where the unit will also be used in shoulder seasons, models with heating and dehumidifying modes extend the selling season, and fan-only mode keeps air moving when cooling is not required.

What to put in the request for quotation

A quotation is easier to price, and harder to get wrong, when the request states the target application rather than only a model number.

  • Target room size or volume and expected ambient temperature
  • Voltage, frequency and plug type for the destination market
  • Whether heating, dehumidifying or fan-only modes are required
  • Any noise limit that applies, for example for bedrooms or offices
  • Certification and label requirements for the destination country
